Step-by-step guide

  1. 1

Locate nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra (ASK) or enrolment centre

    Online

Use the UIDAI 'Book an Appointment' portal or the UIDAI locator at myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in to find the nearest Permanent Enrolment Centre or ASK. Walk-ins are permitted at most centres but appointment holders are given priority.

  2. 2

Fill the Enrolment / Correction Form at the centre

    Offline

At the Kendra, collect and fill the Aadhaar Enrolment / Correction form (EAF). Provide accurate demographic details. For correction/update, mention the Aadhaar number (UID) or Enrolment ID (EID) and the specific field(s) to be changed.

  3. 3

    Submit documents and biometric capture

    Offline

Submit original supporting documents. The operator scans fingerprints (all 10), captures iris scans, and takes a facial photograph. For children under 5, only the photo is taken and biometrics are deferred.

  4. 4

Receive Enrolment ID (EID) acknowledgement slip

    Offline

After biometric capture, the centre issues a printed acknowledgement slip containing a 28-digit Enrolment ID (EID = 14-digit enrolment number + date & time). Keep this slip; it is used to track the status of your application.

    Issued immediately
  5. 5

    Track application status

    Online

Use the EID on myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in or the UIDAI mAadhaar app to check enrolment/update status. UIDAI sends an SMS to the registered mobile number once Aadhaar is generated or updated.

Things to watch out for

Address update is the only online self-service update

Only address updates can be done online via myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in using an OTP to the registered mobile. All other demographic changes (name, DOB, gender) and biometric updates require a physical visit to an ASK.

Limited number of free updates

UIDAI allows each demographic field to be updated a limited number of times (name: 2 times, gender: 1 time, DOB: 1 time). Exhausting these free updates requires special approval from a UIDAI Regional Office.

EID acknowledgement slip must be preserved

The 28-digit EID on the acknowledgement slip is the only way to track the application and retrieve the Aadhaar number if the registered mobile number is not working. Loss of the slip before Aadhaar is generated can cause significant delays.

Beware of unauthorised Aadhaar enrolment agents

Only UIDAI-authorised operators at official Aadhaar Seva Kendras or Post Office / Bank centres are permitted to enrol or update. Unauthorised agents who charge higher fees or claim to expedite the process are fraudulent; report them to 1947 (UIDAI helpline).

Mobile number linkage is critical for online services

Many government and private sector Aadhaar-based services (e-KYC, DigiLocker) require an OTP sent to the Aadhaar-linked mobile. If the linked mobile number is inactive or lost, update it at an ASK before attempting such services.

Biometric lock / unlock before sharing

To prevent misuse, lock your biometrics on the UIDAI portal or mAadhaar app when not in use. Unlock temporarily when biometric authentication is needed (e.g., PDS, banking). Always share a masked Aadhaar or Virtual ID (VID) instead of the actual 12-digit UID.
