Renew your driving licence before it expires; valid 20 years for non-transport, 3 years for transport vehicles.

At a glance

Jurisdiction

India — State-level (Regional Transport Office where the DL was originally issued or the applicant's current home RTO)

Who applies

Any holder of a Driving Licence that has expired or will expire within the next year, who wishes to renew it to continue driving legally.

Typical time

7–30 working days for the smart-card renewed DL to arrive by post; some RTOs offer same-day processing at the counter.

Fee

₹200 for DL renewal; late renewal fine of ₹1,000 for non-transport vehicle and ₹300 per year (up to ₹1,500) for transport vehicle if renewal is done more than 30 days after expiry (fees vary by state).

Who should use this process

  • Must be the holder of an existing Driving Licence (expired or about to expire).
  • Application for renewal must be filed within 1 year of the expiry date for non-transport vehicles.
  • For transport vehicle licences, renewal must be completed before the validity date or within the prescribed grace period.
  • Must be medically fit; Form 1 (self-declaration) required for non-transport; Form 1A medical certificate required for transport vehicle categories.
  • Must be a resident of India with a valid address.

Who does NOT need to apply

  • If the DL has been expired for more than 5 years, the Licensing Authority may require the applicant to re-appear for the driving test before renewing.
  • DLs that are currently suspended or revoked by a court or authority cannot be renewed until the disqualification period ends.
  • Licence holders with outstanding court orders or unpaid compounding fees may face delays.

Things to watch out for

Late renewal attracts a fine

Renewing a DL more than 30 days after expiry incurs a late penalty. For non-transport vehicles, this is a flat ₹1,000 fine. Do not delay — an expired DL makes driving on public roads an offence.

DL expired for over 5 years may require a fresh driving test

If your DL has been expired for more than 5 years, the Licensing Authority has discretion to require you to pass a fresh practical driving test before renewing. Avoid letting your DL lapse for this long.

Transport vehicle category requires medical certificate every renewal

Holders of transport vehicle (commercial) licences must submit a fresh Form 1A medical certificate from a registered medical practitioner with every renewal. The self-declaration Form 1 alone is not accepted for these categories.

Address change must be updated before renewal

If you have relocated and your current address differs from the one on the DL, update the address in the Sarathi system at the same time as the renewal. Failing to do so will result in the renewed smart card being mailed to the old address.

Aadhaar linking is required on Sarathi

Many states now mandate Aadhaar-based eKYC or Aadhaar-linked authentication on the Sarathi portal for DL services. Ensure your Aadhaar number is linked to your mobile number for OTP-based verification.
