Understanding UAN (Universal Account Number) activation

Activate your UAN when joining your first job; it is allotted by your employer via EPFO.

At a glance

Jurisdiction

Central — Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), Ministry of Labour and Employment

Who applies

Any EPF member (employee covered under the EPF & MP Act, 1952) who has been allotted a UAN by their employer but has not yet activated it on the EPFO member portal.

Typical time

Instant to 24 hours once OTP is verified successfully.

Fee

Nil — no fee charged by EPFO for UAN activation.

Who should use this process

  • Must be an EPF member with an employer-allotted UAN.
  • Mobile number must be seeded with Aadhaar (or registered with UAN) to receive OTP.
  • Aadhaar number must be linked and KYC-verified against the UAN by the employer before self-activation via Aadhaar OTP is possible.
  • Date of birth and name on Aadhaar must match EPFO records.
  • UAN must not already be activated.

Who does NOT need to apply

  • Employees of establishments exempted under Section 17 of the EPF & MP Act who maintain their own PF trusts may not use the EPFO member portal.
  • International workers covered under the SSA (Social Security Agreement) follow a separate registration path.
  • Members whose Aadhaar is not yet seeded to UAN must first request their employer to do KYC seeding before self-activation.

Things to watch out for

Aadhaar must be linked to UAN before activation

If your employer has not seeded your Aadhaar to your UAN, the Aadhaar OTP path will fail with an error. Follow up with HR to complete KYC seeding first; it can take 24–48 hours to reflect.

Mobile number must match Aadhaar records

The OTP is sent to the mobile number registered with UIDAI (Aadhaar), not necessarily the one on salary records. If your Aadhaar mobile is old or changed, update it at an Aadhaar enrolment centre before attempting activation.

Name and DOB mismatch causes activation failure

Even minor spelling differences between your name/DOB in EPFO records and Aadhaar will block activation. Raise a correction request with your employer or at the EPFO office before retrying.

Multiple UANs — only one can be active

Employees who switched jobs may have two UANs generated. EPFO rules allow only one active UAN per member. Activate the latest one and merge the older UAN through the employer's portal to avoid mismatch in PF balances.

Browser/session issues can truncate activation

The EPFO portal can be slow during peak hours. Use Chrome or Firefox in incognito mode. Do not refresh the page after OTP submission; wait for the confirmation message before closing.
