Step-by-step guide

  1. 1

Visit bank branch or use net/mobile banking

    Both

Approach any participating scheduled commercial bank branch where you hold a savings account, or log in to the bank's internet banking or mobile banking app. Nearly all public sector banks (SBI, PNB, Bank of Baroda, etc.) and many private banks participate. You can also enrol through Business Correspondents and Common Service Centres (CSCs) in rural areas.

    Both

Collect the PMJJBY or PMSBY enrolment form from the bank or download from jansuraksha.gov.in. Fill in personal details, savings account number, nominee name, nominee relationship, and nominee contact. Sign the auto-debit authorisation. Submit the form at the branch counter. Premium auto-debit and cover activation

    Offline

On submission of the consent form, the bank debits the annual premium (₹436 for PMJJBY or ₹20 for PMSBY) from your savings account immediately or on the next working day. Insurance cover commences from the date of premium debit. Ensure your account has sufficient balance on 1 June each year for annual renewal (or maintain a minimum balance).

  4. 4

Obtain enrolment confirmation and policy certificate

    Both

The bank issues a confirmation SMS or passbook entry for the premium debit. You may request a policy certificate or acknowledgement slip from the branch. Keep this for your records. For claims, the bank acts as the insurance master policyholder on behalf of the insurer (LIC for PMJJBY, New India Assurance / NPCI empanelled insurers for PMSBY).

    1–2 days
  5. 5

Claim filing (on death or disability)

    Offline

In case of death (PMJJBY) or accident (PMSBY), the nominee or claimant submits a claim form along with required documents (death certificate, FIR / police report for accident, disability certificate) to the bank branch within 30 days of the event. The bank forwards the claim to the insurer. Claim is typically settled within 30 days.

Things to watch out for

Account balance must be maintained on renewal date

Both PMJJBY and PMSBY are renewed annually with auto-debit on 1 June (or anniversary date). If your account has insufficient balance on that date, the cover lapses. Ensure a minimum balance of ₹456 (₹436 + buffer) or ₹40 is available. Lapsed cover can be reinstated by paying arrears, subject to insurer's terms.

Enrolment per scheme is restricted to one account

If you have multiple bank accounts, you can enrol PMJJBY or PMSBY through only one account per scheme. Duplicate enrolments are detected by the insurer and excess premiums are refunded, but claims may be affected.

PMJJBY cover is not portable between banks easily

If you close your account and move to another bank, you must re-enrol in the new bank. The prior year's cover may be at risk. Always enrol in the new bank before closing the old account.

Nominee details must be current and accurate

Claims are settled to the registered nominee. If the nominee predeceases the insured or nominee details are incorrect, the claim process becomes complex. Update nominee details whenever life circumstances change.

30-day waiting period for PMJJBY death claims

PMJJBY has a 30-day waiting period from the date of enrolment. Deaths occurring within the first 30 days are not covered except in case of accidental death. Plan accordingly when enrolling.
