Original documents: Carry originals only for in-person visits — do not hand them over permanently unless explicitly required.
Visit digilocker.gov.in or download the DigiLocker app (Android or iOS). Click 'Sign Up'. Enter your mobile number (linked to Aadhaar) and receive an OTP. Set a 6-digit security PIN. Optionally, enter your Aadhaar number and authenticate via Aadhaar OTP to link your account to Aadhaar and unlock all features. Your account is active immediately.
After account creation, go to 'Profile' and link your Aadhaar (if not done during signup). Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number and authenticate with the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile. Once Aadhaar is linked, your name, date of birth, gender, and photo from UIDAI are auto-populated in your DigiLocker profile. Aadhaar linking unlocks issued documents and the consent-sharing feature.
Go to 'Search Documents' in DigiLocker. Choose the issuer (e.g., CBSE for marksheets, Income Tax Department for PAN, Ministry of Road Transport for DL/RC, UIDAI for Aadhaar). Enter the required details (roll number, PAN, DL number, etc.). DigiLocker fetches the digitally issued document in real time from the issuer's repository. The document appears in 'Issued Documents' in your account.
DigiLocker also provides a personal 'Drive' (cloud storage of 1 GB) where you can upload scanned copies of documents that are not yet issued digitally (e.g., property documents, insurance policies, birth certificates from local bodies). These uploaded documents are stored securely but carry less legal weight than issuer-issued documents.
When a bank, employer, or institution requests a document, they send a 'Pull' request to your DigiLocker account (via their integrated system). You receive a notification and can approve or reject the request. You can also 'Push' documents by sharing a secure link directly from your DigiLocker app to the recipient. Each share requires your explicit consent and is logged in your activity history.
DigiLocker-issued documents are legally valid under the IT Act, 2000 (Rule 9A) and accepted by railways (ticket booking and travel), banks (account opening, KYC), courts, educational institutions, and most government departments. For traffic police, the digital DL and RC on DigiLocker are accepted as valid documents under the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019 and mParivahan app.

Documents in the 'Issued Documents' section (fetched from government issuers) are digitally signed and legally equivalent to originals. Documents you upload to the 'Drive' section are just scanned copies — they have the same legal standing as a physical photocopy and may not be accepted in place of originals.
DigiLocker login and every consent-sharing transaction requires an OTP on your Aadhaar-linked mobile. If you lose this SIM or it is compromised, your entire DigiLocker account is at risk. Immediately lock your DigiLocker account via the website and report SIM loss to your telecom operator if your phone is stolen.
Every issuer-issued document on DigiLocker has a digital signature. Recipients can verify the signature using the DigiLocker verification tool. Do not try to print and modify issued documents — any alteration breaks the digital signature and the document will be flagged as tampered when verified.
While DigiLocker is widely accepted, some older state government offices, courts, and institutions may still insist on physical originals. DigiLocker acceptance is mandated for central government services but adoption by state-level offices varies.
Your digital DL on DigiLocker is only available if your state's transport department has linked DL data to the Parivahan-DigiLocker integration. Some states have delays in data uploading. If your DL is not appearing, contact the nearest RTO to confirm your record is updated in the VAHAN system.
