Utility Connections#133

Understanding New domestic LPG connection application

Apply for a new LPG connection when setting up a new household; KYC, Aadhaar, and address proof required.

At a glance

Jurisdiction

All of India — LPG connections issued by three Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs): Indian Oil Corporation (Indane), Bharat Petroleum (Bharat Gas), and Hindustan Petroleum (HP Gas); regulated by Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas

Who applies

Any Indian household setting up a new kitchen who does not already have an active LPG connection under any OMC; one connection per household is the norm under KYC-based Aadhaar-linked single-connection policy

Typical time

Online application to connection release: 7–21 working days; connection is released after KYC verification and deposit payment

Fee

Security deposit for one 14.2 kg cylinder: ₹1,450–₹1,600 (varies by OMC and cylinder type); equipment security (regulator): ₹150–₹250; total deposit approximately ₹1,600–₹2,000 (refundable on surrender)

Who should use this process

  • Must be an Indian citizen aged 18 years or above
  • Must not have any existing active LPG connection under any OMC (any distributor, any OMC, any family member at the same address) — checked via Aadhaar-linked deduplication
  • One LPG connection per household (one per Aadhaar / family unit) under the 'One Nation, One Gas Connection' policy
  • Must have a valid address proof for the delivery location
  • Must provide an Aadhaar number for KYC-based deduplication check and subsidy linkage

Who does NOT need to apply

  • Households that already have an active LPG connection under any OMC (Indane, Bharat Gas, or HP Gas) at any address
  • PMUY-eligible BPL households — they should apply under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (see process 134) for a free connection
  • Commercial establishments (restaurants, hotels, canteens) — they require commercial LPG connections under different quota and pricing norms

5Application form (OMC-specific)Download / PrintFilled new LPG connection application form from the OMC portal (mylpg.in) or distributor; includes consumer details, address, and connection type

Original documents: Carry originals only for in-person visits — do not hand them over permanently unless explicitly required.

Step-by-step guide

  1. 1

Choose OMC and apply online on mylpg.in

    Online

Visit mylpg.in (unified LPG portal) and select your preferred OMC — Indane (Indian Oil), Bharat Gas (BPCL), or HP Gas (HPCL). Click 'New Connection' and fill the online application form with personal details, address, Aadhaar number, and bank account details. The portal runs a real-time deduplication check against Aadhaar to verify no existing connection. On successful application, an application reference number is generated.

  2. 2

Locate nearest distributor and complete KYC

    Offline

The portal assigns the application to the nearest LPG distributor. The distributor may contact you by phone to visit their office for in-person document verification, or a field agent may visit your address for KYC. Submit original Aadhaar, address proof, and photographs. The distributor verifies Aadhaar-linked deduplication and completes the KYC process.

  3. 3

    Pay security deposit

    Both

After KYC approval, the distributor issues a demand for the security deposit (for cylinder and regulator). Pay the deposit at the distributor's office via cash, cheque, or online payment. Retain the receipt. The security deposit is refundable when the connection is surrendered.

  4. 4

Receive connection and first cylinder delivery

    Offline

After deposit payment, the distributor schedules the connection installation. A field technician visits the premises with the cylinder, pressure regulator, ISI-marked rubber tube, and the LPG consumer card. The technician demonstrates safety procedures, checks for gas leaks, and hands over the connection. Sign the delivery receipt and keep the consumer card and Registered Mobile Number (RMN) for future refill bookings.

Link Aadhaar-bank account for PAHAL subsidy (DBTL)

    Offline

To receive the LPG subsidy (PAHAL scheme), your Aadhaar must be linked to your bank account, and your bank account must be seeded with your Aadhaar at the bank. The OMC will automatically initiate subsidy transfer after Aadhaar-bank linking. If not already done, visit your bank to seed Aadhaar. Once linked, after each market-price refill, the subsidy amount is directly credited to your bank account within 2–3 working days.

Things to watch out for

Aadhaar deduplication prevents a second connection

The OMC portal runs a mandatory deduplication check on your Aadhaar before approving a new connection. If your Aadhaar is already linked to an existing connection (even an old one you forgot about), the application is rejected. First surrender any old connection at the previous distributor and obtain a surrender certificate before applying for a new one.

Use only ISI-marked equipment — unsafe cylinders and tubes cause accidents

Always use an ISI-marked pressure regulator, ISI-marked rubber tube (changed every 2 years), and an ISI-marked cylinder. Do not use counterfeit or local market equipment. The OMC provides ISI-approved equipment at the time of connection; replace using only OMC-authorised spares.

PAHAL subsidy is not received if Aadhaar and bank are not linked

LPG subsidy under PAHAL is transferred only if your Aadhaar is linked to your bank account (Aadhaar seeding). If your Aadhaar-bank seeding is pending, you pay full market price for the cylinder but do not receive the subsidy credit. Visit your bank immediately after getting the connection to ensure Aadhaar-bank seeding is complete.

Do not transfer connections informally

When moving house or selling property, do not leave the LPG connection behind for the next occupant without formally surrendering it at the distributor. An informal transfer means the previous occupant's name remains on the connection, and they are liable for any penalties or misuse. Always surrender formally and obtain a surrender certificate.

Cap on subsidised cylinders per household

Subsidised LPG refills are capped at 12 cylinders per consumer number per year under the current policy. Beyond 12, additional cylinders are billed at full market price. Track your refill count on mylpg.in or the OMC app to avoid unexpected price hikes.
